A principle of historical research: a timeline can impose structure on a mess of data and reveal the meaning.

2000s: A number of introvert boys with special interests assure you that Playing a Female Character in DnD is OK and Means Nothing.

2020s: Most of them are women now, Looking the Other Way when memes like this come up in the feed.

I often resort to my dies/dices when I chose my character’s gender, class race, or other features. What does it say about me ? Not much relating to gender identity, I guess, except that I don’t have any problem with playing any gender.

    (Still not cis, though.)

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 have especially been core since you can set the gender aside from voice and genitals. They feel like a real self-insert.

I’m still sad Panam wasn’t into my female V, but I respect it. Judy is awesome.

Yeah, it was definitely telling I would pick female characters and have them in lesbian relationships… Femshep and Liara 🥰

I also tend to choose female characters when playing anything where i can choose, which leaves me with 2 possibilities:

    • I am a very late bloomer and will realize my true nature somewhere in my sixties or
    • I simply like looking at and hearing women a lot more than looking at and hearing men. The voice acting is a lot better most of the time (Cyberpunk 2077 is the obvious example - i can’t stand playing with the male voice), and women are allowed to express emotions in games more often than men; worst offenders are games with a protagonist whose personality is so flat that even glue just slides off.

Dang you expressed it perfectly so I don’t have to. My second playthrough on Cyberpunk 2077 as the male VA was such a let down. Let men have emotions! It’s like that in a lot of games.

Also, men hairstyles in character creators are trash.

Yeah Cyberpunk is unfair example, the VA for fem V was absolutely perfect and dudes was very mediocre. Same with AC Odyssey, the VA for Kassandra gave such a great performance I don’t even remember the brother option despite him still being in the rest of the game lol. And of course anything with Jennifer Hale voicing a playable character practically removes the alternatives for me, still main a plant lady in GW2 and only play femshep in ME because I love her acting so much.

I mean, 1 - both are badass, who doesn’t like to play as a badass person?

2 - neither game lets you choose a male character.

      3 - see 1

In response to 2: this is true but remedy entertainment (who made control) also made Max Payne 1 and 2 which I never really had any interest in. And I actually have the vr horizon game and get sad when I hear the main character speak.

I vividly remember modding game files to add feminine sprites and clothing for my characters at some point without even questioning it.
