Icelanders will vote in a referendum on Saturday whether to resume entry talks with the European Union amid growing global insecurity. Voters are not being asked to decide just yet if they want to join the 27-member bloc – only whether they want their government to negotiate possible terms.

    Armenia and Georgia are both also potential candidates, and both are in Asia Minor.

    Canada could pose other problems in that standards there are historically aligned with the US and Mexico rather than European neighbours (110V electricity and North American TV standards are two examples, though by then broadcast TV may be an anachronism).

      They have tons of laws in common with the US, trade deals, railways that cross all over the place… Cutting canada from the US would be a nightmare
