Utena is wild. One episode the main character ponders the nature of desire; the next episode the main characters rival turns into a cow because they ate too much.

The fight theme that plays every damn episode with the exact same animation every time always gets me and I never skip it.

      UNMEI

Next year Utena turns 30 and I haven’t seen it since it aired. Might be time for a rewatch!

    • studio was founded to get away from the ‘manga-to-anime’ pipeline and have more control
    • was meant to be a standard children’s show
    • nah, fuck that.

it has its issues, imo the worst part is the repeating animations, but the story is interesting, thought provoking. there is also a movie that does a slightly different spin on it, but it almost completely leaves reality behind but on the other hand looks gorgeous
in the og series, the episodes are really short (especially if you start skipping the repeating bits), so you can pick it up if you have a just bit of time
imo try the series and watch the movie after, otherwise you’ll enjoy the movie less without knowing who’s what

I kinda agree but I wonder what in particular you are thinking of as better? Do you mean something in the same theme/genre or just in general?
