My grandma fought for women’s rights so that my mom would have a better life. My mom voted to get rid of those rights so that she could experience a better economy. Now our economy sucks and we lost our rights which was an incredibly predictable outcome of an idiot conman running things.
My grandma died in 2018 and she fought very hard for pro-choice and women’s access to birth control. I guess I’m glad she died in 2018.
As a woman I’ve been working my ass off all my life including military service, and I honestly wouldn’t mind getting a taste of the old days back when women were allowed to be cooking & cleaning & childbearing & nurturing loving & fully living in our feminine energy, and respected & appreciated for all of it. Unfortunately the whole world relies upon money nowadays and if you don’t earn money then you’re considered worthless, and for some reason all the work women classically did was not considered worthy of pay. So here we are all struggling for survival in this capitalist hellscape, women can’t feel feminine & beautiful while we’re working soul-draining jobs to stay alive. Hooray for women’s rights movement I guess?. At least I have my own money & bank account & credit cards & domicile & complete independence, although being a wage slave isn’t really independence, is it? If this is what women were fighting to achieve, congratulations, we got it. Here we are. What good is it when we’re all too exhausted to enjoy life because working our asses off to survive?
Interesting
I’m pretty confident there’s been a lot of men saying pretty much what you just did for a long time. Something to the effect of “you’re welcome to have what I have but you’re not going to enjoy it”. The system doesn’t care if you have a penis or not. Some participants in it certainly do but the system itself is equally shitty to anyone not born with shit loads of money.
Multiple evidence based studies show that gender and race affect success in life. Just because everyone is having a shit time doesn’t mean some demographics don’t have it worse. We’re a long way off from equality, and even further away from true equity.
I never said that wasn’t true. I said men, but I’ll extend that here to include the racial descriptor white, don’t have it as good as others think they do. Unless you mean rich white men but then “white” and “men” aren’t the qualities doing the heavy lifting. Your last sentence is getting closer to what I said.
I was responding, primarily, to this:
The system doesn’t care if you have a penis or not. Some participants in it certainly do but the system itself is equally shitty to anyone not born with shit loads of money.
I’m saying there are systemic biases.
I wonder why so few boomers are activist now… They have the least to lose.
They haven’t all given up, but it is true that many aren’t as aggressive as they were decades ago. They might not have as much to lose but a 76yo coming in hot against a Proud Boy in an ICE uniform is not going to achieve much. I live down the block from a semi-assisted retirement complex where it’s an all out war between the widows and widowers. The ladies have 8647 banners from their balconies and the dudes have “Chillin’ like a felon”. I sometimes help with the community garden and my favorite little old lady is the one with a tshirt with a uterus on it that says “It may be dried up but keep your hands off”. I know a lot of them spend time doing charitable volunteer work and activism. I imagine if shit gets really bad we can talk them into planting IEDs. Nobody expects the grannies.
Have you been to a priest lately? It’s like 75 percent boomers around me. The stereotype of boomers all being conservative assholes is just that, a stereotype. Look at the results of the last few elections by age demographics: more older folks voted Republican than Democrat, but not by much.
I haven’t been, bless me father for I have sinned. It’s been forever since my last confession.
Good to hear there are still some activist oldies in the US. At protests over here in Europe it’s mostly younger people (mainly 25 and below). There are some boomers but not nearly as many as young people.
Interesting, I wonder what the difference is.
Maybe the topics attract more young people. We don’t have kings over here, I mean, we do, but not like the tangerine TACO. So the biggest protests here have been against the war in Gaza and global warming.
Hungary and Serbia did have some large protests against their governments, but I don’t know whether those had more old people.
Ah, that makes sense
Local street corner has had weekly protests on Saturday for over a year. This is random suburbia, not downtown or anything. Older folks are the overwhelming majority of routine protestors. Certain big protests had more young people, but those were all one and done. Older folks seem to be putting in the work far more than the younger.
At the No Kings protests, I’ve noticed that it’s mostly the older folks whose signs and paraphernalia show the most effort. That might be at least in part because many are retired and have more time to put into it, but there’s a real vibe of “This is what I do - this is my job” to their protests.
Those same moms voted for the corrupt motherfuckers who dismantled everything they protested for in their youth.
Citation needed.
All of the folks I know who were progressive when younger are at least as progressive now.
There’s a very large minority of progressive boomers, and a similarly sized large minority of younger conservatives. The differences aren’t that huge. But there’s this narrative that all boomers are right wing assholes that everyone here seems happy to latch onto, while also condemning discrimination of pretty much any other group.
Well, except billionaires - I think we can all agree discrimination against billionaires is justified.
Depends on how you define ‘progressive’, because after the last 34 years of US politics, I don’t even think a citation is needed.
Every Democrat considers themselves progressive, and every president self-identified ‘progressives’ have elected has been more regressive than the last. It was Clinton with DADT, rebranding US warmaking as ‘peacekeeping actions’, or supercharging the gutting of the poor and middle class with his free trade agreements. Then there was Obama, who definitely marketed himself as a progressive, but turned out to be a black Dubya and gassed up fascism and regressive war on terror policies, on top of militarizing police, letting the rich skate after they robbed the globe of trillions, and even made health care significantly more expensive. Then there was Genocide Joe, who enthusiastically funded and armed a genocide and engineered famine, allowed ‘cop cities’ into existence, and saw the cost of living explode and did nothing meaningful to stop it.
And they also supported Hillary Clinton, even as the Dems rigged primaries for her and made the Donald Trump presidency possible.
I think it’s eminently fair to say boomer women did their part in making the current fascist hellscape possible.
I know all that sounds aggressive. I really hate centrists for what they’ve done, and especially Obama for having a supermajority and being a black Dubya anyway.
Because all boomers did that, and X, Y, Z aren’t moms.
Oh, it wasn’t for nothing, but it certainly had no real effect on the world itself, sure. Let’s call that whole era an age of personal teachable moments— though the lesson took years to recognize. 🤷🏼♂️😬😅
