Because of electoralism in the US where there has been 2 red scares and what looks like a bourgeoning third. I don’t like AOC, but I also don’t think that we have to self-identify as “left” to be effective
The whole point of running in elections is to demystify socialism as a boogeyman. Otherwise you’re just doing opportunism.
