Am I incorrect, but isn’t LinkedIn fairly useless as a site for finding new employment? From what I’ve read of it, it has devolved into just another mediocre social network with the full assortment of trolls, spammers and con-men.
It’s been the main channel for legitimate recruiters finding me over the past couple decades, too.
It works best if you don’t engage in the “social media” part and just use it to passively advertise yourself.
That is the best way to use LinkedIn. A buddy of mine does well in his industry and has been recruited multiple times via LinkedIn. I’ve used it to find a couple of jobs over the years and it’s pretty good for that too.
Engaging it as a social media site is where it really turns sour.
Ah, okay. that makes sense, and is good to know.
Its a prime tool for mapping and maintaining your network unfortunately.
There are really 3 sides of linkedIn.
- Social media drivel
- Company advertising
- Finding jobs/employees as it has completely taken over glassdoor and indeed in the EU it seems.
I have literally never seen the social media side, but there is plenty on LinkedInLunatics. I have found multiple jobs with it though.
Finding jobs/employees as it has completely taken over glassdoor and indeed in the EU it seems.
wow, I didn’t know about glassdoor, thank you!

Finding employment is about the only thing I think it can be useful for. It’s the only thing I’ve ever used it for.
It’s definitely still the top, or at least top 3, places to get a white-collar job, unfortunately. I don’t know why anyone engages with the social media bullshit, they’re all insane.
Can we PLEASE stop calling everything …gate? There wasn’t even a gate involved in the first place. This naming convention fucking sucks.
Uh oh, it’s Gategate all over again
Microsoft is involved, so there could be a Bill Gate.
There wasn’t even a gate involved in the first place.
Watergate.
Your fake outrage is a distraction from the real violations that Micro$lop is committing.
My question is how. Am I too naive to believe that the browser, Firefox in my case, would stop a webpage from crawling your computer?
And I would be very surprised if their crawler manages to somehow work on Linux…
It looks like the attack only works on Chrome (or Chrome based browsers).
They have 2 methods for figuring out which extensions are used: asking the browser for files related to each of the 6000+ extensions they scan for, and checking the DOM for injected content
But that doesn’t mean that Firefox couldn’t be targeted in the future.
A good way to protect yourself is to use uBlock Origin or something similar, which will block the collected data from getting sent to LinkedIn
Extensions? It just said software above.
Is it actually scanning for installed software on the system or just chrome extensions?
Yeah it’s a bit dishonest
Instead of
hidden code searches their computer for installed software
I would say
hidden code searches their browser for installed extensions
