Dylan, useful idiot with commit access, pushed age verification PRs to systemd, Ubuntu & Arch, got 2 Microslop employees to merge it, called it 'hilariously pointless' in the PR itself, then watched Lennart personally block the revert. Unpaid compliance simp.

It makes sense tbh since pretty soon all of the porn sites will be themselves incorporated into systemd. Systemd must consume all.

This whole debacle makes me feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Are people ignoring that age checks just like this are littered all over the internet already and it’s not a big deal because you just put whatever nonsense you want and move on.

Like unfortunately with the way things are going it seems like this is a relatively pragmatic way to avoid going full UK and needing an internet loicense. Actual age verification with ID/face scan/algorithmic age detection is proliferating pretty rapidly (see discord etc). If this law lets websites/programs hand off this liability to the OS then they might because it’s cheaper and we won’t all have our facescans and internet history in some fucking Palantir database.

It’s also not a slippery slope because none of this is building the architecture required to make real age verification mandatory?

I think it would be better if you focused on seeing how you can effect things from where you stand, rather than stressing out about stuff online. Most people go on the internet to vent their frustrations or find somebody to affirm their pre-existing beliefs. It’s unlikely you’ll change anyone’s mind. Don’t end up like me who wasted precious time on online debates that end up nowhere.

Welcome to libre

A comm dedicated to the fight for free software with an anti-capitalist perspective.

The struggle for libre computing cannot be disentangled from other forms of socialist reform. One must be willing to reject proprietary software as fiercely as they would reject capitalism. Luckily, we are not alone.

Resources

  1. Free Software, Free Society provides an excellent primer in the origins and theory around free software and the GNU Project, the pioneers of the Free Software Movement.
  2. Switch to GNU/Linux! If you’re still using Windows in $CURRENT_YEAR, take Linux Mint for a spin. If you’re ready to take the plunge, flock to Fedora! If you’re a computer hobbyist and love DIY, use Arch, Gentoo, Guix or the many, many offerings out there.
  • Those on Apple Silicon Macs can consult Asahi Linux for available options.

Rules

  1. Be on topic: Posts should be about free software and other hacktivst struggles. Topics about general tech news should be in the technology comm or programming comm. That doesn’t mean all posts have to be serious though, memes are welcome!
  2. Avoid using misleading terms/speading misinformation: Here’s a great article about what those words are. In short, try to avoid parroting common Techbro lingo and topics.
  3. Avoid being confrontational: People are in different stages of liberating their computing, focus on informing rather than accusing. Debatebro nonsense is not tolerated.
  4. All site-wide rules still apply
