EV sales have lagged expectations, and the shift comes as Europe waters down emissions targets that would allow combustion engines to stay around for longer.

Well… Right now in germany, in may there will be a bonus of up to 6000 eur for new electric cars. Citroen has an offer to double that bonus.

And their cheapest electric car is 20.000€

So you get a new car for about 8000€

All dealers in germany are working in overtime right now and are selling a lot of cars.

reintroduce diesel versions in Europe for models ranging from various passenger vans to the Peugeot 308 and premium DS No. 4 hatchback.

Those models are NOT on the smaller nor cheaper side, and burn fossiel fuel. I don’t see how this would help them compete against small and cheap EVs.

Last year it added a petrol hybrid version of the Fiat 500

This model makes slightly more sense, but still burns fossiel fuel.

Still looks like stellantis is going to produce less EVs, multiply the number of models/assembly lines. It’s not obvious how that’d help compete with cheap chinese EVs or reach economy of scale. Please try producing SMALLER and cheaper EVs models with less connected/electronic gadgets, to cather to those who care about pollution and their budget, not so much about expensive shiny gadgets.

      That’s the magic: it won’t.

I’m under the impression the companies would rather mop up all quick profits they can right now and then die than committing to new technology and realities that would allow them to still exist in 5+ years time.
