Is it a gender thing? I just read the comic as either:

Being inclusive of multiple genders, or

A comparison of the artist’s experience, and of someone they know.
Yeah, I’m fairly sure the artist is just showing herself and her significant other. Showing the two types of gamers via their own relationship.
