But at what cost
In September, the country released its latest climate targets, to cut overall greenhouse gas emissions by between 7% and 10% of their peak by 2035.
Experts say those targets are too modest to stave off global catastrophe and a long way from the 30% cut that is feasible and necessary.
But China has a record of underpromising and overdelivering on climate targets
Although a baseline target of 7-10 pc is too low indeed, China is definitely pulling its weight in achieving climate goals because of how much solar energy they have sold to the rest of the world at bargain prices, not to mention the long term research they put into making this possible.
And of course, China is basically 5 years ahead of its target in reaching peak emissions. Saying that they will only cut down 7-10 pc emissions in 10 years is clearly a modest statement, given the rate of growth in solar, wind, hydro and nuclear energy. Not to mention, China’s property boom is being wound down, giving even more room for lower emissions.
