I think it all boils down to saying “GDR is the antipode to progressive politics”. Which, to me (a huge ignorant on GDR politics) is a rephrasing of “communism=bad”.
Thankfully I can distinguish between communism, authoritarianism, progressivism, conservatism, and whatnot. But, for some reason, the former-GDR lands consistently align with conservative policies.
Their tone might have been a bit sarcastic, but was neither condescending nor insulting.
I for one would like to know why GDR would be more likely than other parts of Germany to adopt these policies.
