Okay but I’ve got a little mold growing above my shower and this seems like the time to ask, what’s the best way to ger rid of it myself? I don’t know the different kinds of cleaners
if its just little spots, most bleach-based cleaners will be sufficient to kill the spores. Spray it directly on, let it soak for a few minutes (you should see the mold dying and fading), then wipe it clean with paper towel and dispose in trash. Preferably wear a face mask and gloves, and ventilate the area that you are using the bleach in.
if the mold is taking up meters of your wall, or its a porous surface like wood, then you probably need professional cleaning/replacement.

Step 0: Don’t mix cleaners. Some have ingredients that combine to make chlorine gas (such as ammonia and bleach) or other toxic gases.

I can’t help with this over the internet, but I think the first step would be to identify the mold (consider maybe your region, the mold’s color and growth pattern) and hopefully this will help you figure out if you need to consider respiratory protection. Some fungi have harmful spores, many don’t. And it will also hopefully help you know what to use to kill it and make sure it doesn’t come back.
Also identify the surface it’s growing on and make sure that whatever you’re planning on doing to the mold won’t damage whatever it’s growing on.
A friend moved into their rental recently and it had some small amount of dark and slightly orange molds on the shower tiles and grout. That just needed baking soda and water and scrubbing, then a spray of vinegar to sit for a few minutes and kill any remaining bits to stop it just regrowing.
This is actually really really weird for me. I went through extreme benzo withdrawal a few years back, I think about a year or two before this fucker did. I couldn’t afford a clinic in Russia to put me in a coma for it, so I just had to go through over a month of repeated seizures, severe constant full body and head pain, sleeping only a single hour every few days, eventual psychosis, and then months more of post acute symptoms. It’s been years and I never truly recovered, having permanent nervous system pathology and pain. I managed to avoid covid by being a complete shut in, and only leaving my little garage-converted house house once a month to buy bulk food with food stamps. And sometimes doctor appointments. Because since the withdrawal I developed some kind of chronic autoimmune disorder. Or something, because it hasn’t been diagnosed since I don’t have money to see specialists, but the doctors I do see know I have some very serious but uncommon problems. I spent the small amount I did have saved to be able to see a doctor I liked but had to stop after a few sessions because I couldn’t afford it anymore This doctor was dead certain my problem was/is mold exposure causing all these severe but seemingly disparate, otherwise unexplained symptoms. But because I have nowhere else to go except a tent on the street somewhere, and because there’s not a chance in hell the place I’m staying will be able to get examined, let alone treated for mold, I just have to keep “living” with it. I’m not even totally sure it is mold causing all my (really fucking weird) health issues, but it does seem to line up.
It’s just so strange to me how much my own health problems mirrored the issues of this evil pile of human trash. In contrast though, I don’t eat meat, not ever. Maybe that’s why I’m not yet quite dying in the hospital like this asshole. I am mostly vegan but sometimes just have to take what I can get. But to have my health ruined by benzodiazepine withdrawal a couple years before it’s in the news because of this shitstain, and now to read he’s hospitalized due to the exact same thing that I’ve been told is the root of my health problems that make me want to [cw] [redact myself] every day. The similarities bother me.
I mean, it’s surely part of his enduring bad health, but he was already a frail old man who got wiped out by a single glass of apple cider like a decade ago, and currently he supposedly only eats meat and who knows what else. There’s a torrent of shit that he has undermining his health and the overlap seems to only be partial, though it still makes sense that it would be existentially sickening

Yes there is no question the all-meat diet shit is political and performative. I think he tries to couch it in some paleo nonsense, but the real reason is because he wants to show that he’s a “real man” not one of those weakling soy loving postmodernmarxist sensitive types. Any vegan will know the type of asshole who, when they find out you’re eating a meal without animal products, will laugh in your face and say “I’m going to go home and eat TWO steaks tonight” because they think they’re nullifying your veganism by doing that. Peterson is that guy, he’s just taken it to the extreme and lathered on some layers of pseudophilosophical terminology to try to make it sound intellectual.
Decent stopgap but still not truly safe solution to your situation is an air filter running 24/7 and regularly replacing the filter monthly. It Will at least dramatically cut down on the spores youre breathing in.
A cheap $20 box fan with regular $10-15household air filters taped to it is extremely effective. At filtering the aur
Its actually much more effective than buying fancy HEPA air filters. Not by filtering smaller particles but by moving WAY more air through a slightly less effective filter for said small particles.
This is good advice, and I am doing that. I have 2 air filters I run all the time, one of them is a HEPA that was gifted to me long before all this started. I also keep windows open and basic fans placed to try to displace as much inside air with outside air as I can. It does make a difference.
You should find out what rights you have as a tenant, depending on your country/state/province/wherever
An elderly relative lets me stay on their property rent free in return for yardwork. It’s all informal and honestly I’m privileged to be able to stay here without paying anything except for some labor that I would do anyway. You are right and if the circumstances were a usual tenant/landlord situation that would be my next step. It’s not like that though, they’re not a landlord. I don’t know how many years this person even has left, they have been generous to me and have their own financial problems.
If there were a chance I’m hard-trolling the person I’m already being kind to I would want to know. It seems like there should be a dignified way to bring it up. It’s one thing to ask for no lettuce, it’s another to ask for no mold or help fighting it/investigating it.
I have brought it up several times, even mentioned that mold might have a lot to do with my health issues. But they don’t want to acknowledge the problem, partly I’m sure because it would be so expensive to fix and they aren’t exactly rich either. Even though there are a few places where there used to be visible black mold, like under the sink which I cleaned out thoroughly but couldn’t get behind the counter without tearing out cupboards, or where I had to remove part of the ceiling from water damage caused by a roof leak, they say I already fixed it and that it’s too dry here for mold to thrive further in where I can’t see or get to. They’re elderly and set in their ways, and even though they’re generous, sometimes if I mention problems with the place, they aren’t above reminding me how much they’re already doing by letting me stay here basically for free.
