> Secretary General of Amnesty International Agnes Callamard says that the success of any lasting ceasefire agreement depends on its firm rooting “in respect for human rights and international law.”

Callamard’s comments come hours after US President Donald Trump announced that a ceasefire deal had been agreed upon by both Israel and Hamas.

A ceasefire agreement “must include an immediate stop to Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, as well as concrete steps to end its unlawful occupation of all of the Occupied Palestinian Territory and to dismantle the system of apartheid,” Callamard wrote in a post on X.

Meanwhile in Gaza, Israeli attacks have continued despite Thursday’s announcement by US, Qatari, and Egyptian mediators. Heavy air strikes and artillery shelling were reported in Gaza City and Khan Younis overnight, according to local media.

Israeli quadcopters were also reported to have dropped bombs on civilians in Gaza City.
