I’d second just reading it. The series try to capture the art but it’s pretty rough. Like one punch man art vs anime, there’s just no way to capture all the detail. Also it’s not terribly long, ~300 chapters.

Don’t take the shortcut of an abridged version, you’d be doing yourself a disservice. Also if you truly haven’t experienced the story in any shape or form yet, do it blind. :) Read the manga is my recommendation. Also you can’t go wrong with the '97 anime, but that’s just the beginning. Maybe even the Golden Age arc movies, but only after the '97 anime.
