Is it still good?
I have vague memories of the original. It was good for its time and pretty much inspired most of the best indie games we know and love.
As someone that hasn’t played it since the fan translation like a billion years ago, I want to ask if anyone here has played the remaster, and if it still holds up?
Such a strange and interesting game, from what I remember. I hope time has treated it well.
I’m hearing that the original composer for the soundtrack didn’t want to be a part of the rerelease, so they had to redo all of the music in the game. I never played the original so I have no reference for what that means.
The original music was from Alias Conrad Coldwood. Many songs contained samples of questionable copyright and he was afraid that Content ID systems would copyright strike people he’d already given permission to use the music in the past. Here’s a screenshot of his email and the source of it (from reddit sorry).
The music was pretty good so it’s a shame, but I’m sure Toby Fox did a good job replacing it. Pepper Steak was the most well-known and was the regular battle music. It’s swing (electroswing?) and very memorable. Also I really like Fake Orchestra and Minuit a fond la caisse.

Alias Conrad Coldwood was the original composer and he’s a great experimental artist who made a pretty iconic soundtrack that was a big part of the game’s identity. It’s definitely one of my favorite game soundtracks, though I’m not sure if most people would think it’s worth listening to on its own, since part of what makes it great is how it works with the writing to convey a distinct tone.
They brought in a bunch of other artists to do new music, and some of it is pretty good.
