This was from 10 years ago, I hear he’s more chill now.
idk, i ran into him at a grocery store and i said “oh shit, you’re linus torvalds!” and he said “actually it’s LINUS torvalds not linux torvalds. strange you’d recognize me but not know my name. do you need something?” then before i could even answer and say that’s what i said, he said “no? great”, then he took a usb drive out of his cargo pocket and tossed it at me and walked away. he didn’t leave the store btw. any time i would pass him in an aisle he would just pretend to be really focused on whatever was on the shelf. as for the usb stick, i haven’t plugged it in to see what’s on it.
I saw him at a grocery store in Portland yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
From what I’ve heard he tried to cool down for a while but eventually went back to old habits.
He’s certainly still very blunt and can be a little hard to work with at times, but he’s calmed down slightly
He’s also a russiagate Finnish liberal who loves the United States who has admitted on record that he is against Russia is because he’s Finnish (I wonder what period of history that refers to) (see removing Russian maintainers due to US sanctions threats)
He also can’t moderate his community for shit and Linux can easily turn into a boys club where innovation is stifled because the oldbeards don’t approve (see rust for Linux)
No wonder silicon valley idolizes this guy, they all want programmers to be like him, apolitical and unfocused.
Also, this is the epitome of many intelligent coders and many intelligent people in general being pieces of shit 🤣. It is funny how jerks just say “I am just blunt” and “respect has to be earned”, meanwhile for them disrespect is free and abundant 🤣.
they’re a dime a dozen
