What. This looks like a Ragnarok 1 remaster. Can nostalgia really take them that far?

As a RO addict I can say it looks very tempting. I’m pretty sure that monetisation will kill my enthusiasm and I’ll be back to relapsing into private RO servers every couple of years.

Hah. Relapsing into private servers every couple of years. Sounds like me a decade, a decade and a half ago. Haven’t played an MMO in forever though.

It hasn’t been that long, I’m just 40 and was playing RO maniacally until I was 20 or so.

I have very fond memories of hanging out south of Prontera gate on one of the first independently developed private servers where it was like maybe 3 maps, monsters and items implemented. It was running for an hour every day because the dev was running it straight off his PC. That handful of people I met there was my pack for many years and we migrated from one public beta to another because we couldn’t afford official servers. Fun times. I feel a relapse coming.

Hahaha. I played for years. Was a GM on a few servers. Wrote a few quests.

Despite that, my highest level character ever was a Lv 84 Gypsy. On a rate 4 or 10 or something similar server.

… I was never good at this game lol.

Experience curve was such a slog at level 70 and upwards that I never understood how people ever got to 99 (or rebirth for that matter). I’m not sure anyone was ever very good at RO, even at high level guild battlegrounds it only ever looked like random mayhem. I think most of us were there to sink time and escape reality via cute hats.

Official EXP and drop rates were unbearable. Even reaching job 2 was an accomplishment lol.

PvP… Never really managed to get into it. It took a specific build and a LOT of rare equipment to even get your foot into the door. Thara Frog Card and Marc Card and whatnot. Without those “basics” which were actually really hard to find, you’d die super fast.

Plus consumables… To do a single WoE you’d possibly burn through hundreds of potions.

                It took INVESTMENT.

Yeah seems to be kind of a remaster.

And I have no idea. RO2 and Tree of Savior didn’t really grab people

Speak for yourself, Tree of Savior grabbed me hard. I could tell that it was not a good game but I stuck it out anyway for months because there was some ineffable part of it that I was just in love with.

And no, I did not have the lingering nostalgia for Ragnarok Online fanning the flames in the background.

(Okay, I realize that I am taking an objectively true fact personally, but still! My opportunities to stand up for this game are few and far between, so just let me have this.)
