Kids being kids reminded me of Onfim, the boy from medieval Novgorod who drew himself slaying dragons instead of learning his letters

I love these kinds of photographs. Even better is when we find archaeological evidence of familiar behavior tens of thousands of years ago. We humans haven’t really changed since Homo sapiens first came to be, despite all our cultural layers.

Except this one was just stopping off between shifts crawling about under the loom.

So is the young one, that picture is really old. In the picture, they’re both obviously alive

Got a source for that claim?

A quick reverse image search and reading through of different places where this was posted; noone else seems to be suggesting that it’s a dead body

Not to mention the eyes move between the top left and other photos and she’s pushing the kids hand down in the top right photo…

Based on the age of the woman and the photo, I can almost certainly confirm that they are both dead. I’m sorry.

Plot twist, that was a picture taken yesterday on a really old camera.

Really morbid to take pictures of a kid messing around with a dead body

Except it’s not a kid messing with a dead body, the Victorians were morbid, not deranged.

I don’t know why the person you responded to claimed it was…

This actually was a thing that happened sometimes (trigger warning - dead bodies) but assuming that there’s a corpse in every Victorian portrait is not reasonable.

I was. I tried to reference the picture from a few days ago, in which one of the persons were dead, because back in the day that was a normal thing to do.

        Unfortunately nobody got my joke…

It’s a bit beyond his period of interest (the presumed turning point in the 17th century), but a casual reminder that Phillip Aries was a cherry picking hack, as if the Eurocentricism of his thesis isn’t proof enough.
