All and any. The UK Strategic Defense Review came out a few weeks ago, putting forth the case for a massive defense spending increase and increased militarisation in general. One largely overlooked section lists the primary threats that require this increase. Along with the usual threats of hostile foreign states and terrorism, there is a also a new bullet point… “Demands on government for employment and social welfare support”. They’re already planning for the unrest that comes with mass poverty.

The crazy thing is that domestic security apparatus is woefully under-equipped to deal with such unrest due to the effects of austerity, in which they’ve cut funding for policing just as much as they’ve cut other expenditure. Last summer’s riots showed that the police have no capacity to handle widespread street violence whatsoever, and this only continues to be the case. They would have had to deploy the military if not for those riots petering out/being confronted by a broad anti-fascist coalition, and it’s not like the far-right’s organisational capacity has reduced since then.
