    Nails were expensive and valuable for a long time. I once read that up until the industrial revolution an old house would be burned down to get to all of the nails again so that they could be used for new construction. Door nails were different. When hammered the would be be bent to keep them from coming out of the door. Thus the term, dead as a door nail. They could not be repurposed.
