Even with its profits skyrocketing, multinational corporation ArcelorMittal refuses to give workers at its Contrecoeur-Ouest plant an additional $5 per hour, even though they have been hit hard by inflation in recent years. Faced with this stonewalling and difficult working conditions, members of Local 6951 of the United Steelworkers went on strike in early August. As a result…

I have the opportunity to work in a field where jobs are all over the place. My last employer gave shit raises every year. Around 2%. Told me I was one of the best paid employees on the team. (And also one of the seniors, so…) I finally switched companies with a good salary bump that was worth it.

But people who work in manufactures like these, they have nowhere else to go. If the place closes down, often the whole city shuts down and dies.

That’s why I think any company that deals with natural resources and their transformation should be nationalized. Entire towns shouldn’t be held hostage by a greedy corporation like this.

As a result, one of the seven Canadian plants producing rebar for concrete has come to a standstill. Thousands of construction sites across the country could soon be affected, as the company is currently working through its surplus inventory.

Let me make a bet, Mittal is gonna use this as leverage to force some government level to intervene on its behalf, as this threatens the already feeble efforts to address the housing crisis.

Plot twist that I pray for:

The government nationalizes the plant as it’s a key part of it’s effort to address the housing crisis.

LOL could you imagine? Me neither.

It’s what a competent government that serious about addressing the problem might do. The bar is low - all we are hoping for at this point in time is to not be sold for cheap to American corpos, to at least negotiate getting us a dinner before fucking us. :D
