Everyone knows that social media is rife with agenda-bots paid for by billionaires, but it still works because:
-
90% of everyone thinks they can spot it
-
90% of everyone thinks bots wouldn’t bother with their tiny little community
-
90% of everyone considers it gauche to call someone out on being a bot, to the extent that some places even have a rule saying you’re not allowed to call people bots
-
Because they are working hard enough to become a billionair too one day!

I met a retired Marine that said this exact thing. “We can’t raise their taxes, i don’t wanna pay that when I’m a billionaire.”
Sure, Steve, as we paint the wall in a bar. I’ll be a billionaire in just a minute.
IMO, conservatives view life as a competition. They view complaints on society as sour grapes against the winners of the game. Don’t bitch, get up and compete! They view it from the point of an individual rather than viewing society as a whole. They don’t concern themselves with societal problems, only with their own problems.
Well they shouldn’t because they mostly suck at the competition lol
My current thinking is that for many people, their in-group is whiteness. Conservative policies speak to that. They’re willing to suffer and die for this ideology. Yes, I did just read “Dying of Whiteness”
This is true. Solidarity always means fighting beside other labor, especially when that labor comes from women or BIPoC and/or LGBT persons.
But, there’s quite a few in the labor-class that prefer their male, white, or “traditional” identities to their labor identity.
Everyone’s just getting algorithmically brainwashed - especially if you aren’t curating your own feed. AI is only going to make this worse - a lot worse.
People need to be actively aware of the media that’s being shovelled into our eyeballs and ears. Understand nuance and bias in every message. Even the format of its delivery is a message. Alas, those require a bit of critical thinking which many tend to lack. Oh and, there’s no such thing as common sense.
