Snip:

More than two-thirds of US citizens are calling for a quick end to Washington’s war against Iran, even if it means ditching its stated goals, a 31 March Reuters/Ipsos poll shows.

The survey of 1,021 adults found that 66 percent support ending US involvement quickly, while just 27 percent favor continuing military operations until all goals are achieved. Six percent did not respond.

Support for prolonging the war remains higher among Republicans than Democrats, though even there, a sizable 40 percent want a fast exit from the war even if their objectives for victory are not met.

At the same time, public opposition to US military action is growing. Around 60 percent said they disapprove of strikes on Iran, compared to 35 percent who support them.

  • the if the “American public” that gets asked these questions were a representation of the real American public there wouldn’t be a war in the fitst place.

Every opinion poll is ontologically an immediate victim of selection bias.

america isn’t a democracy. lots of things that are overwhelmingly unpopular are done anyway and lots of things that are wildly popular don’t get done.

that’s no to say that sampling biases don’t exist, but there’s been no attempt to market the war and no 9/11 to rile people up and everybody understands that they’re being negatively impacted by it even if they only care about the price of gas and not iranian lives.

Not sure I agree with the first part but yeah polls are stupid and not worth engaging with. IMO polls are about as accurate a depiction of the population as someone making an observation about their coworkers.

  • personally, i’m kinda hoping that the US keeps trying to declare the end of hostilities/ceasefire and the iran keeps blasting military installations and US commercial interests until western influence in the region is reduced to a lone, independently franchised Arby’s in Syria that people take selfies in front of as a bit.

i don’t know which response camp that is.

This morning I had a Superintendent of a Catholic girls school tell me he hoped Trump finally got the Iran situation under control because the cost of fuel was rising faster than the school could cope with and they might have to fundraise, and its such a hassle yall. This man who walks with God doesnt want peace on earth and goodwill towards man, he doesnt want the innocent to suffer less, he wants Trump to rassle those Iranians into check because his gas bill was increasing.

I am not religious, and I tend to take a negative view of organized religion most times, and interactions with this man just end up reinforcing my view. this man has to have been one of the 27 percent

Its a girls highschool. He also used to coach b-ball there. I think the man is absolutely vile. I dislike going to this school because he is the one I deal with but our shop has a contract w the school, and I am currently the only one at the shop w experience to work on commercial boilers so I get stuck w it. Luckily they only call me out when the regular maintenance guys cant do it.
