Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs has recalled nearly 13,000 passports after a software update caused a printing defect.

    That really sucks.

For fairness and to make sure they properly catch the full scope of it, they should recall every passport in a specific timeframe and work to expedite the application process to replace the improper ones so as not to disadvantage those seeking passports.

I imagine printing 13,000 passports securely again will cause a delay. I would assume also they would need to return the defective one before issuing the new one. I’d assume they will contact those affected, which should be easy to track given the codes.

I know the last time I updated my Irish passport, from Australia, it was delivered in about a week. There were delays after covid, as there were globally. Also after Brexit as many sought Irish citizenship that were entitled to it. So there will be delays, but I imagine not significant.
