Discord reportedly filed confidential IPO paperwork and has pinned its hopes on a debut in March.

One can hope this’ll bolster Matrix and XMPP, but it probably won’t.
Matrix doesn’t scale well at the moment. It’s great for smaller communities, but anything with 10k+ users and it chokes.
