Good. If only 18% want Merz back, that says everything. The man is out of touch, polarising, and a walking reminder of why voters hate internecine CDU drama. Turning 70 and still doubling down on the same old hardline fiscal and migration stances won’t win new voters, it just energises the opposition.
CDU needs renewal, not reruns. If they want any shot in 2029, they should stop grooming relics and pick someone younger and pragmatic who can actually broaden the party’s appeal.
With regard to the chancellor’s age – Merz turns 70 on Tuesday – 52% said it would be better if he were younger.
Merz also felt that it would be better if he were younger.
Not the chancellor we need, but the one we deserve.
