Who would have thought?
Damn. Stabbing things hurts them? I’m just learning this now for the first time…
Ikr? Stabbing… Not good. I have to write this down.
I know, definite some big if true level shit here.
Almost reminds me of when scientists had to explain to people that fish and crustaceans also feel pain.
Do people mind being harpooned? Asking for a friend.
We can’t be sure until a government study tells us.
Unrelated I’m looking for volunteers in a government run experiment.
Something really funny about needing a report to work that out.
“Surprisingly, when you stab someone with a sharp and pointy stick, it hurts quite a bit. Fascinating.”
Nobody could have predicted this.
I’m not sure if it’s some sort of cognitive dissonance or denial, but a lot of people believe for some unknown reason that various animals or other organisms don’t feel pain… even though they react like they obviously do. Lobsters are a good example.
TIL that being harpooned is painful and unpleasant.
Right?
Dear scientists, I too dislike being skewered with sharp pointy things. I also dislike getting perforated by sharp stabby things or punctured by fast metal things.
So we’re clear.
Maybe they noticed certain calico sea mammals have started fighting back
It was also just a single company running a few extremely old ships. The guy who runs it must have had extreme pull to have lobbied for keeping whaling running for so long in the face of massive unpopularity.
Minke whale tastes absolutely fantastic though. Might miss it.
I thought harpooning whales was an ancient relic of the past, not something we’re STILL fighting against in the 21st century. Oof.
How else do you propose we acquire delicious and non threatened minke whale meat?
Yea, its insane that its still going on.

That’s good news. Maybe it’ll put pressure to stop collecting shark fins
Wow, imagine that, other mammals and animals can feel pain. Who’d have thunk?
It’s incredible people have trouble understanding this.
no fucking shit…
Next study: mammals can have generational memory similar to corvids?
