personally, I think this is a reasonable crashout… Dude has a point. :blob_hai:

Screenshot: everyone Member we need to have a serious talk. Some of you members are saying [that] you like Petra and Maili and younger characters and then say “You’re 14, 13”. That’s still not ok. No one wants to hear your weird jokes about how you would fuck Petra or take her as your wife and for all I know half [of] y’all could be 36 and lying about your age to get away with it. This is enough! Stop!
Some of you might be joking, but [the] others, [I] don’t really know, and some don’t even know your age and will call you pedophiles.

@animemes@ani.social

  • @animemes@ani.social looking back now, maybe I hadn’t thought this one through before posting. Now I think I’ve started a war in the comments :BlobCat_Yilkes:

just to be clear, yes, I posted this to the memes sub because I thought it was funny that the admin crashed out.
but thinking it through, this is actually a serious case. I wasn’t aware of how bad the predator problem on Discord was. Children younger than 13 are joining the platform and are getting exposed to all sorts of things nowadays.

i apologise to anyone for my lack of sensitivity of the severity of the situation, and for posting this as a meme.

    This isn’t a “crashout.”
I believe you gooners have crossed a line.
Who asked you to publicize your sexual deviancy to a chat I have no idea it’s context?
I’m aware you gen z have no filter, but seriously, y’all really say publicly who you want to fuck, even to your mothers?

Pretty certain this screenshot is offtopic. And not a meme at all.

Right? Was a time when that shit was kept to yourself. Unless you were in a thread or post or community that was about that. You weren’t on some random anime board talking about how you wanted to be balls deep in some character.

    • @AntiBullyRanger@ani.social @animemes@ani.social

can’t blame you for taking it on me, I was so insensitive to the situation.
I thought like the predator problem was normal on every platform, but at least there is action being done against it.
Did my bit of research, and I know better now. i would like to apologise that you had to see this on the memes today, I realise that it isn’t funny at all.

That said, I am honestly surprised how DC got away with it. and they aren’t keeping their members in check… like, how? aren’t they supposed to get sued for inadequate child protection measures or something?

This person needs to learn about punctuation and grammar.

I don’t know if I agree with the “we don’t know so we are just going to call everyone pedophiles” sentiment. I understand they need to be careful to comply with the law, but that could also easily backfire as if it is false it could be considered slander (possibly libel depending on the specific legal definition).

I don’t really know much about this particular situation, but I think if I was the admin of the server here I would caution the mods against just blanket labelling people, especially when they aren’t certain of it. If the server is 18+, then anyone saying they are below 18 should just be permabanned, joke or not. Otherwise just says in the rules “No sexual jokes/comments about characters under 18,” and ban anyone that breaks the rule. Pretty easy solution to whatever is happening here, I think.

I mean if you say your under 14 on discord your account is perma banned first offence if that message gets reported.

People need to fucking learn to report instead of just ignoring messages. This even extends outside of discord.

Every game, message app, forum ever that iv seen. The reason fucking 99% of shit goes unmoderated is because people don’t fucking report shit. They just bitch about it, block the person and move on.

Blocking and ignoring a reportable problem is why this shit goes unmoderated.

Assuming of course mods are doing their job. But when shit is automated like discord… STOP BLOCKING AND START REPORTING HOLY FUCK.

Yeah there’s a billion false reports that slow down the action of mods, but fuck if I see another person say they don’t bother reporting cause people don’t get punished instantly I’m going to freak the fuck out.

Well I wrote it that way because the applicable laws may be different depending on where in the world that server pirmarily operates in.

Due to the nature of Discord, messages posted on it could be considered permanent or temporary, and libel almost exclusively applies to permanent writing such as a blog post or news article in the USA (but may be different in other places).

Most people use it. So, I too used It’s the best platform to build a community believe it or not. There’s even a built in forum in Discord now. 🤷

All platforms are notorious for that. Moderation is expensive, and consistent free user moderation is extremely hit or miss, mostly miss.

Unless you have enough admins dedicated to moderating every community regularly, like weekly at a bare minimum, shit will get out of hand in the places they don’t visit.

For places the size of Discord, Facebook, Reddit, Lemmy, YouTube, etc. that’s just not feasible without an army of paid moderators. User submitted reports are only useful if the users aren’t partaking, and that’s the first tier of nearly every online moderation system because few companies could even consider staffing a moderation team even remotely large enough to begin to tackle that problem.

Any sufficiently large group has child predators. It’s not just a discord problem.

It’s easier to just say humanity has a child predator problem.

Of course it isn’t just a Discord problem, but its popularity and accessibility means that it’s one of the platforms with the most issues.

        • @shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works @animemes@ani.social

i saw your comment, and wondered “how bad is the situation actually”? I didn’t know how bad it was. I’m so sorry you had to see this in the memes today. I apologise for my lack of sensitivity on the situation.
You’ve just alerted me about the predator problem on Discord, which is so massive, I think I might consider leaving the platform now… or at least, stop checking as often as I used to…

It’s alright. Most people aren’t aware of just how bad it is. I’m only really aware because I’ve spent time moderating servers, and while I was never exposed to anything myself, I know people who have been. I still use the platform since my friend group is on it, but hopefully we’ll eventually find a different one that meets our requirements.

        Pretty much https://www.merriam-webster.com/slang/crash-out

But the issue isn’t really that he’s doing a completely different thing here, and more that the intensity just doesn’t match. This person isn’t severely angry or distressed, they’re just telling some people off in a mildly angry post. The only thing that might point to severe emotions is the lack of punctuation, but that’s a completely normal way to write for lots of people - I guess you’d have to be more familiar with how this person usually writes, like if they were usually very particular about grammar, orthography and punctuation I’d agree with saying that this is “crashing out”.

In our current age of toxic positivity and “good vibes only” mantras, any negative emotion is to be perceived as being at its maximum. Regardless of its actual intensity.
