    There are going to be a lot of good machines that should hit eBay for cheap as companies dump their old stock. Grab home servers, media machines, secondary devices, emulation rigs, etc as the opportunity presents itself.

      yea. it might be a good time to buy ‘older’ hardware, but ‘refurbs’ that are blessed by microsoft (gen 8+) are already higher in price than they should be.

      there’s also a bunch of sellers everywhere selling the old stuff with ‘windows 11’ at stupid high prices, too. i’ve even seen sellers trying to pass off specs like 2nd-4th gens as ‘new’, calling the old chips ‘reclaimed’ or some bullshit.

    I’m thinking about buying a dozen cheap (from companies throwing away almost new) laptops, flashing Fedora with activated auto-update and bottles and selling them for maybe $100 more on ebay or wherever.

    I learned your ago to disconnect devices in my lab run by computers from the web. They literally last forever without updates.

    More than once, Microsoft would brick $800,000 microscopes by pushing an update even with updates turned off.

      Are they going to be paying for extended support? My job is still on windows 10 (after they tried to upgrade to 11 and ended up having business applications not work as they should), but they are paying for extended support.

    If UAC bypasses weren’t left unpatched I would have kept my own one so I could reign chaos as soon as Microsoft drops it.

    You know what, I’m keeping it anyways, so I can prove an argument by telling you about it.

    I’m sure many malware developers have tons of exploits ready for when support is dropped.

            No need, the entirety of a building from a Uni I went to runs on XP with the last security patches and browsers that are built for xp compatibility like Supermium with security extensions. They never got hacked. No issues at all and the students can connect to the internet all they want, they aren’t even monitored besides checking they still work once in a while. This is because despite lack of funding for new PC’s, the security department is competent and actually knows how to work around that, as opposed to just saying what you are all saying here. There are Win7 machines there too, which can be remotely accessed via internet. There’s a magical thing called a firewall. Did you know routers also have a firewall? Crazy right? Did you also know that almost all PC’s are connected to routers, not directly to the internet? Crazy too, right? That’s like basic level security knowledge. If you’re so terrified you will be hacked that you’re willing to put up with Microsoft’s shit, i feel bad for you all.

      I once tabbed out in thd middle of a game to check an email and absent mindedly authorized an update while i was in desktop. A few minutes later I started getting overheat warnings–I set the threshold very low; I like my stuff to last–I started getting hardware lag.

      It turns out my graphics card updated, and the game fell back to integrated graphics while it was unavailable. The terminal code to switch it back without shutting anything down required touching too many things i dont like to touch unless I’m sober, and was really complicated, and I mistyped the one to restart, so I saved my game, and pressed the reset button on the case to make it better.

      Linux is so broken.

    I’m still convinced Microsoft will walk back on this hard deadline. I would put my money on 3 days after their self imposed WIndows 10 dooms day that they will extend W10 updates with at least 6 months, most likely a year.
