He needs to reach the masses. We aren’t that. He could add Mastodon or at least enable bridging from threads but moving? I don’t agree with that.

And campaign in the places that American oligarchs fully control with numerous incidents of censorship.

Elon Musk has engaged in foreign interference, muting people he disagreed with personally and disabling Ukraine’s access to Starlink during crucial hours.

We don’t need Facebook collecting too much data on him either.

Mark Carney can do a lot to support Mastodon development. We should always expect our leaders to do better.

“They’re busy” comes off as really dismissive when these are valid concerns. Governments can multiple things. Of course Carney isn’t doing everything by himself.

Oh absolutely would love if he could support the Fediverse but I don’t think he’ll have the reach here. We need people to hear what the gov is doing (good or bad)!

On the flipside, the government hosting a fediverse instance of Mastodon would give a lot more credibility than a blue checkmark, and could be easily linked in other social media. This would give all the reach they had before and more, give them independence from external social media control, and would advertise the fediverse and Mastodon as alternatives to corporate controlled social media. Since the big problem with building social media is getting people to leave what they’re currently using, duplicating your message into a new and preferred system would ease that transition. And if tools were made to cross post onto different social media, it would make it about as easy as what they’re doing now.

Absolutely. I am not saying don’t go to Fediverse. They should be here and then copy to other SM really.

It sure would be nice if our government set up an instance for themselves and used that as their primary social media source. Similar to what some countries in EU are doing.

Having the PM on Mastodon would be a nice symbolic gesture easily filled with fedi bridge in the interim, but having individual municipalities spin up their own instances could potentially have a bigger impact.

I actually sent him an email during the election to support mastodon/activity pub, that there were local servers and that they should support Canadian media. Never got a response unfortunately.

I don’t care about what social media Corpo Carney uses to dickride billionaires and Israel, but we for sure need our federal government to stop using closed-source, centralized and American services like Xitter for communications.

You realize he’s probably too busy to do the twittering and mastadonings and Facebooking right? He’s hired someone to do that peasants work.
