In a warning to Russia, President Donald Trump said Friday he’s ordering the repositioning of two U.S. nuclear submarines “based on the highly provocative statements” of the country’s former president, Dmitry Medvedev, who has raised the prospect of war online.
Good job Mr president. Now you’ve helped Russia with a few things.
- If they know where the sub’s are, they now know if you lie or tell the truth about the sub’s.
- If they didn’t know where the sub’s are, they now know where they probably weren’t, and where they may be going
- In either case, they know you’ve fucked with their patrol routes, which may give them yet another advantage with finding them; or seeing how you influence their routes

You don’t really need to reposition nuclear subs as a show of power - that’s not how they work.
They play a specific role in nuclear deterrence, in that they stay hidden and provide retaliation capability in case the mainland gets attacked and nuclear silos in Montana, etc. get destroyed.
Yeah we can nuke the goddamn moon with a missile controlled from earth. We have hypersonic jets that can carry nuclear payloads from bases all across the planet. Those are the first strike legs of the nuclear triad. The subs are terrible at first strike capacity, but so long as they remain hidden they can’t really be prevented from assuring mutual destruction.
