Social videos, memes and retweets are becoming fodder for criminal charges in an era of heightened responses to student threats. Authorities say harsh punishment is necessary, but experts say the crackdown has unintended consequences.

I thought that the first amendment would protect them because as far as I can tell, it doesn’t seem like they made a true threat. but it turns out school speech is more limited than I thought.

Felony charges for a middle school student on, what I imagine is, a first offense seems a bit ridiculous, but an example should be made of them.

Why, exactly, should an example be made?

What is the purpose of an example being made in the first place?

Usually, one would make an example of people who caused some harm so that nobody else does the same harm.

What harm was done here? Or, if you prefer: why, exactly, should an example be made here?

Did you read the article? It suggests several alternative actions across a variety of similar cases that were more effective responses.

I did. It also suggested felony charges… which is what I was commenting on. Please get your dopamine needs elsewhere, fool.
