Germans need to work longer and harder, Economy Minister Katherina Reiche has told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung national daily in remarks published on Saturday.

“Demographic change and increasing life expectancy make this unavoidable. Lifetime working must rise,” she said.

Yes that is definitely the problem, let’s ignore the structural issues that cause industry to be less competitive or the widening gap between manager and worker compensation, surely those lazy fucks are just not working enough /s

Can we maybe just start being more efficient by adopting digital technologies? That would already help our economy a lot. Next let’s improve our infrastructure and public transport.

Germany really is quite an inefficient country but not because we’re not working enough.

When I moved I had to pay the deposit and the first rent in cash and the contract was filled out using a type writer and the building administrator complained she could not print my emails because they were encrypted somehow. That’s the German experience in a nutshell.

This debate has likely been instigated by Harry Stebbings, a Venture Capitalist, in a Linked post as he argued European startup founders should increase their work hours, embracing China’s brutal “996” work culture in Europe.

The “996” work culture - which means working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week - reigns supreme in China and has been adopted by various tech giants including Jack Ma’s Alibaba and Bytedance’s TikTok, but the system has also been the subject of much protest in recent years.

There are no signs of such developments in Europe so far. In Europe, for example, many tech workers are turning down job offers, rejecting interviews, or even quitting their roles, upon learning of TikTok’s 996 work culture.

Reiche is a fitting name. Also, how about you start working an a new system instead of trying to keep an unsustainable system afloat?
